Why You Need a Prosthodontist: Part Two

In our last post, we talked about what a prosthodontist does and why it’s important to replace missing teeth. Today, we pick up where we left off to talk about dental implants.

With dental implants, you can replace missing teeth and have the strong, supportive smile you’ve been missing. How’s this possible? Because dental implants do more than just replace a missing tooth—they replace your missing root, too.

But First, What Happens To Your Smile After You Lose a Tooth?

When you lose a tooth, that part of your jaw doesn’t have a purpose anymore and, over time, begins to atrophy. As your jaw weakens, your smile becomes susceptible to gum disease and tooth decay, resulting in further tooth loss.

So what started out at just one tooth can become four or five over a period of years. But with dental implants, your smile can be saved.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

In the past, implant placement and restoration has taken at least two visits. But with Dr. Gittleman’s office, your entire procedure can be done in just one visit.

It all starts with a surgeon placing your implant. Depending on how many teeth you’re replacing, you’ll only need one for each tooth, or one for each tooth that will be supporting a bridge or denture.

Once this step is complete, Dr. Gittleman will finish your appointment by putting your new tooth (or teeth) in place.
